Remembering Debi Owens

Debi Owens, far left, with the mARTies Student Visual Artist, Shelby Baillie, and Nancy Turrell (2015)

Our Arts Council family is shocked and saddened by the sudden passing of Deborah L. Owens (9/15/2018). Debi served as a member of our board of directors since 2012 and served a variety of key leadership roles, including most recently as the Chairperson. Debi's commitment to the Arts Council was strong and visible through her active efforts to serve on the mARTies Committee (twice as chair), as a volunteer at ArtsFest, to introduce us to possible donors and friends, and to lend a hand whenever and wherever needed. Her absence will be felt for years to come. Debi was a member of Women Supporting the Arts for several years and enjoyed participating in giving funds to the many organizations and artists who applied for funding from our giving circle. Her commitment to this community was second to none as she also served on a variety of boards in addition to the Arts Council's including The Historical Society of Martin County (Elliott Museum), Humane Society and others. In her role as a vice president at Wilmington Trust, Debi was often the representative from Wilmington who the community saw at events due to their sponsorships gifts.

Gifts in her memory are being accepted by the Arts Council. Funds given in Debi's memory will support our efforts to engage youth in the arts and to encourage others to volunteer their time, talents and treasure for the arts.

Forever ARTS. Helps us Keep the Arts Alive in Martin County, Florida

The Arts Council of Martin County was honored to be one of ten recipients, from across Martin and Palm Beach counties, to be a part of the FOREVER ARTS CHALLENGE. Forever Arts was a challenge program launched by the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties and funded by the MacArthur Foundation. They matched the dollars we raised, up to $25,000 to open a new endowment fund hosted by the Community Foundation.  We are honored to have been selected and are very excited about the opportunity to build our financial resources to ensure our long term legacy in Martin County. With this match, we have a permanent endowment fund in our name at the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties.  We plan to encourage this fund to grow to provide significant funding for our programming to inspire participation in the arts in Martin County.

A Few Legacy Examples
Muellers
Jeanette & Larry Mueller Leave A Legacy

"Our arts community is something I've devoted so many resources to over 20+ years and I wanted to honor that committment and set as an example during my lifetime for my grandchild and children to follow. I hope others join Larry and me in creating a legacy for the arts that lasts." -- Jeanette Mueller

During his life, Professor Mahlon A. Cline was an artist and served for 30 years with Pratt Institute, as chairman of the Visual Community Department. He built a foundation of knowledge on fundamentals of design, which served as a source for visual communication in business, as well as playing a vital part in the art of painting. Professor Cline was never idle, painting and sketching at every opportunity, and volunteering for the organizations he cared about to promote the arts. He chose to honor those lifetime commitments through gifts made in his will, including a bequest to the Council.

Lawrence A. Sanders, successful South Florida author, established a trust/foundation at the end of his life to be the beneficiary of the on-going royalties and income related to the artist works he created while living. The Lawrence A Sanders Foundation now contributes thousands of dollars across South Florida to support the organization he named in his trust documents. The Arts Council is a very grateful recipient of this on-going, annual support.
